Importance of Regular Dental Visits

60 years ago, during the examinations of the people who were joining the military showed that the Americans teeth were in really bad shape. Some people took really good care of their teeth. Surprisingly there were almost no guidelines for how often you should visit a dentist. There was no proactive approach for the dentistry: many providers used to focus on fixing them rather than preventing the problems.

Dental organizations around the globe then decided that there should be a major need to set standards for deterrent dentistry. It was decided and recommended by the medical and dental organizations that people should visit the dentist at least twice a year for the checkups and cleanings because gum disease and cavities are preventable.

How often you should visit to your dentist?

It is highly recommended that you should go to the dentist once in every six months. Have you ever thought that why your dentist and American Dental Association recommend you that you should come back twice a year? It’s because the regular dental visits are very important for the maintenance of healthy gums and teeth. Even if you take very good care of your gums and teeth and at home by flossing and brushing them regularly, but you still need to visit a dentist regularly.

Problems that you may not feel or see can be checked by your dentist. There are so many dental issues that do not certainly cause any pain or become visible until they are in advanced stages. Examples include gum disease, oral cancer and cavities. Problems can be easily treated at early stage and frequent visits defiantly help and allow your dentist to find the early signs of oral diseases.

People with very high risk of dental/oral disease should visit at least every four to five months. The high-risk group includes:

  • Smokers
  • Pregnant women
  • Diabetics
  • People with gum disease
  • People who have a weak immune response to bacterial infection
  • People who build up plaque or tend to get cavities.
